    Social-Emotional Learning with Second Step®

Second Step® Early Learning (EL) is a curriculum designed to promote social-emotional learning (SEL) for preschool age children (3 – 5 yrs) in the classroom and home. It does this by creating opportunities to build children’s self-regulation skills and social-emotional competence. This curriculum is appropriate as a Tier 1 support for typically developing children.

This is a lesson-based approach to SEL which includes the materials and guidance to teach weekly skills that build on each other, practice of self-regulation and executive function skills, integrated practice of these skills within the classroom, and support for parent engagement and practice at home. Each curriculum kit includes weekly theme cards and unit cards, posters, feelings Cards, puppets, Join In and Sing CD, Listening Rules Cards, and teaching materials notebook.  The curriculum kit is provided for teachers in a full-time role in the classroom, leading daily activities and routines.  Other professionals such as directors, behavior support, and specialists like OT or SLP may receive a Supplemental kit which includes items so these professionals can support daily lessons and skills.

Second Step® aligns with the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) framework and evaluation shows an increase in executive functioning skills when compared to a control group.
